What is the Best Time of Year to Prune a Tree?

Light pruning and the removal of dead wood can be done at any time. However, for bigger pruning jobs, it is important that the work is timed for when it will do the least amount of harm to the tree’s health.

For most trees, the best period is late winter or very early spring, before the tree starts to leaf out but after the worst of the cold has passed. Avoid pruning the trees once new leaves have started to grow and in the autumn when the leaves are dropping. Both of these times can be very harmful to your tree.
